"Blue Yodel No. 2" by Jimmie Rodgers

Image
I chose this song because it is nothing like what I usually listen to. Jimmie Rodgers is the father of country and I never listen to country. I don't hate country it is just not my genre of choice. In this song he utilises yodelling to express emotion and convey meaning. The banjo keeps a simple steady beat and he sings about morning a lost love. He lost his girl and now is depressed. The way he yodels to convey this emotion is just right; slow and somber, just the right pitch. Jimmie Rodgers sings a couple verses then yodels, that is the structure of the entire song.     Personally I won't add this song to my library. It is just too slow and boring for my taste. But if I lived back then I think I could have listened to this song on the radio and enjoyed it

"Dipper Mouth Blues" by Joe Oliver

I was expecting a "Blues" song since that was in the title, but it definitely is a fast tempo jazz song. This quick pace makes for an exciting piece of music. It is all an instrumental except for one line that is sung just once. The rhythm of this song is a banjo and the higher notes are a clarinet. Then after a couple bars a trombone comes in giving a bass to the sound. At this point you can't help but feel the magic of the jazz, you just want to dance. Now a clarinet comes in with a wonderful solo and rides the beat masterfully. What follows can only have been improv. All of the parts come together and  their instruments shine. Then a two clarinet solos follow and after that they keep playing till they pause. Oliver then belts "Oh, play that thing". After a couple listens I would start to get bored but then when Oliver would yell, I would get pulled right back in for the last portion of the song.     For me, this i...

"I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good" by Duke Ellington

This piece of jazz starts out with a lovely, soft piano. It then transitions with a waning saxophone, accompanied by trumpets and jazzy percussive beat. The saxophone a focal point of the song, sounds almost as if it is crying. The emotion given off seems as if a woman is crying out for love. After this slow somber beat is introduced, a beautiful woman's voice comes in or rather a Saxophone. I listened to two different versions. One with lyrics and one with a saxophone instead of lyrics. I chose to go with the Saxophone one. It is an amazing performance on the instrument, exuding yearning for love. The lyrical version had a lovely woman singing with the saxophone coming in at certain parts. But I think the magic in the air is best captured by the Sax. Extraordinarily throughout the three minute sax piece you can understand all the different feelings the saxophone is conveying; feelings that are felt when "I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good".     Personal...

My name is Tyler Passey.  I'd like to think my music taste is nowhere near as common as my name. The problem with popular music is it is popular. My favourite genre is obviously Rock, but a close second is Rap.  Pictured:  Eruption guitar solo, Sir  Ski Mask The Slump God
